Where we are

Castelfranco Veneto is located in the heart of the North-East, almost equidistant from Treviso (26Km), Padua (31Km), Vicenza (34Km) and Venice (40km) and easily accessible from both the A4 and A14 motorways and the airports of Treviso (20Km), Venice (37Km) and Bergamo (207Km)

Castelfranco Veneto dowes its name to the “frank” castle (exempt) from taxes for its first inhabitants / defenders.
The mighty square of Rossi bricks was erected over a pre-existing embankment, at the end of the twelfth century by the medieval municipality of Treviso, just north of the village of the parish Nova, on the eastern bank of the Muson stream, to guard the turbulent border towards the Paduan and Vicenza lands.

Already in the first decades of the fourteenth century, on the eastern side, the first nucleus of the town (Bastia Vecchia), developed, also an instrument of defense, equipped with a hospice for the poor and travelers. Walled city by its own definition, it preserves almost entirely the walls and the six towers that rise at the four corners and in the middle points of the east and south. Castelfranco Veneto inextricably links its 800 years of history to the strategic position of central Veneto: an obligatory stop between Venice, Germany and Flanders, between Western Europe and the plains of the East.

City of trade since the beginning and home to an ancient market of grain and livestock, active until the middle of the last century; it was the center, in the past, of the most varied craft activities and railway junction of the first level from the end of the nineteenth century to the present day.

Castelfranco Veneto is universally known as the birthplace of one of the most extraordinary and enigmatic figures in the history of painting: Giorgione, the mysterious genius of light and colour. The fortress contains, like a treasure chest, two of the few gems attributed to this artist: the hermetic frieze of Casa Marta-Pellizzari and the famous altarpiece of the Cathedral of San Liberale.
